Biden Energy Dept. Releases Proposed Rule To Slash Water Use And Energy Consumption In Dishwashers

20 March 2019, North Rhine-Westphalia, Düsseldorf: Glasses and cups stand in a dishwasher in Düsseldorf. In the kitchens of North Rhine-Westphalia, microwave ovens and dishwashers are increasingly becoming standard appliances. Currently, three out of four households already rely on the devices, as the State Statistical Office announced on Wednesday with figures for 2018. Accordingly, 75.6 percent of households in the previous year had a microwave, 72.8 percent a dishwasher. Compared to the figures from 15 years ago, there was a significant increase of almost 16 percentage points, especially in the dishwasher segment. The Department of Energy on Friday quietly released proposed efficiency rules for dishwashers that would reduce water use by more than one-third for some standard-sized machines and slash energy use by 27%.
