You can tell Stanley Crouch has an inflated ego based on his barely coherent column, where in less than 1,000 words he goes from Martin Luther King, LBJ, to Joe Scarborough and David Frum. But what does he say? Nothing whatever of substance. But he says it with confidence and conceit. And that’s good enough. For Crouch, it is all about positioning and impressions. He cites the usual conservative-bashers within the GOP as sources of wisdom and scholarship, who are to be followed and emulated. And why is that? Well, because they’re not conservatives. They’re more like him. The rest of us are paranoid and liars, leading a stupid public astray. Well, that’s great. Very compelling. Of course, the nation faces hugely difficult challenges. And when Crouch decides to engage on substance and principles, then maybe he’d be worth reading again. But he exposes himself as just another pompous ass. Just another boring liberal columnist pretending to be a thoughtful pragmatist.
